Hey Abi! To start off, tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi, I’m Abi - I am 18 years old and I live in California and I am currently in college studying journalism and fashion.

What got you into fashion? What is your relationship with fashion and how has that relationship changed through out the years?

My first influences in fashion was my aunt. She worked in the fashion industry for over 20 years and would teach me a lot growing up. I never really cared for fashion until I was in middle school. I watched the movie Clueless and fell in love with the movies style. This made me realize how important and fun personal style is and I started to find my own. My relationship with fashion has definitely grown since then. When I was young I used my style not only to find myself but also to gain confidence that I lacked when I was younger. Today I hope to help people who are also struggling finding their style and confidence.

Tell us a bit more about Abi The Blog. What inspired you to start the project?

I started my blog because I knew I wanted to get some experience writing about fashion. The idea came to mind when I saw when someone posted about a certain style or aesthetic that a lot of people commented “Where can I shop for clothes like this?” Or “Where can I find accessories like that?”. So I wanted to make a place where you can easily find affordable pieces for a particular style.

How did you go about creating Abi The Blog? What was the process like?

I first began to teach myself how to use a website creator. I chose Wix since it was recommended to me by a friend. I started the first draft of the website in Fall of 2019. I went through a lot of website drafts until I made one I actually liked. I had the final draft of the website in May of 2020.

Who or where do you search for inspiration? What keeps you creative?

For inspiration for my blog I look a lot a tik tok. The trends and styles people are currently talking about - I love to add to my blog. But I also like to do aesthetics that aren’t as popular. Sometimes I stumble upon these on tumblr or Instagram. I love to take inspiration from Pinterest as well. When I am not familiar with a specific style or aesthetic someone requests I immediately go to Pinterest. What I find there will be my main inspo for what pieces I add to the article.

How would you describe your personal style?

My personal style is all over the place. But I’m very heavily influenced by vintage style. I’m currently really into 1920s, 1950s, and 1960s. I would say my style is feminine but with a eccentric flare.

It seems like you love to use films for style inspiration. In your opinion, which film has the best dressed?

There are so many films where I love the costume design! I don’t know if I could possibly pick one as the best dressed. But a film I think shows the true elegance and beauty of fashion is the 1957 film Funny Face. I think anyone who is interested in working in the fashion industry should see this film.

In terms of fashion, if you could travel anywhere in time, where would you go?

I would love to either go to the Rococo period or the golden age of Hollywood. I have always been obsessed with Marie Antoinette ever since I was a little girl. I just love the Rococo period! The colors and the art are absolutely beautiful. I love the extravagance of their dresses. I am also a huge movie fan. I would love to where dresses like Ginger Rogers wore back in the 1930s.

If you got the chance to work with anyone, who would it be and why?

There are so many people I would die to work with. On the top of that list is Doris Raymond. She owns a famous vintage shop in Los Angeles called The way we wore. She is able to just look at a piece and know who the designer is and what era it came from which is a skill I am trying to have. I would just love to work as an employee in her store and being able to work with celebrities and amazing vintage pieces. I would also love to work with Betsey Johnson. She is a designer who I have cherished since my childhood and I just love to work for her someday. She has such a fun personality and I would love to meet her someday.

Where do you see yourself five years from now?

In 5 years I hope to move to Los Angeles and be working in the fashion industry or be a journalist. But I’m keeping my options open and I will wait and see where life takes me.

Thank you so much for taking part in this interview! Is there anything else you would like to share?

For anyone who is struggling to find their personal style, my main advice is if what you wear doesn’t make you light up with joy then it isn’t for you. Wear clothes that you truly love it makes all the difference.
